Real Money Portfolio - Update 6/25

Coming into this past week I was expecting to give back a significant part of the previous week’s 5% gain.  Pleasantly, the Real Money portfolio held court; closing out the week with a slight 0.1% gain.  This was in the midst of a 2% down week in the S&P 500.  You gotta love that.

I am expecting some significant downside pressure at the beginning of the week as the Bear Stearns Hedge fund blow-up has given the market the jitters.  “How Might the Subprime Issues Unravel“ is an excellent article by Barry Ritholtz that summarizes the situation pretty well.  All we can do is put of stops in place and let the market do what it does…

No trades this past week.

YTD: Real Money 12.5% v S&P 500 5.9%

Another +5% week.  You know what that means - we will probably give a good chunk of it back this coming week.  That’s the crazy market these days.  Volatility rules.  Let’s take a look at this past week’s action. Continue reading ‘Real Money Portfolio - Update 6/15′

Real Money Portfolio - Update 6/9

In last week’s report, I was pleased to report that we had a great week up 5.7%.  Considering an advance of that magnitude - I was expecting to give some of it back.  At one point this week, I thought that the market was going to take it all back.  However, the market was gracious and only claimed 4.1%.  How is that for volatility?  Over the course of two weeks, we are up 1.6%.  If I could do that every two weeks - it would be a pretty good year.  Although, I would much prefer 0.8% per week.

Let’s take a look at the action - we did get shaken out of a couple positions.

“What a week” is becoming one of my favorite phrases.  By far, this was the Real Money Portfolio’s best week of the year as it tacked on gains of 5.7% v. S&P 500 1.3%.  Also with a couple new adds - the portfolio is back to being fully invested.  Let’s take a look at the action.

What a week?  Volatility ruled and it forced a few moves.  Once again I said good-bye to Cresud.  That stock has been a thorn in my side all year.  Also made a couple partial sells.  Let’s take a look at the action.

Options expiration week is always interesting.  There is a lot of money at stake and the big money is determined to have as many options expire worthless as possible.  Real Money member, PCU, is a great example.  It opened on Monday around $90 and was pounded all day closing at $86.50.  On Tuesday, it floated back up to $89.  Then around 2PM the pounding continued non-stop.  The stock closed the day where it started at $86.50.  It closed on Friday at $85.09.  Surprisingly it closed over $85, but there was no way in the world that it was going to close over $90.  The games people play.

For the week the Real Money portfolio was down -1.4% v. +1.1% for the S&P 500.  There were a few changes in the portfolio, so let’s take a look.

In last week’s update I said the following,

I think this is the third time this year the portfolio has been fully allocated.  In the previous occasions, the week after moving to 100% were disasters.  Let’s hope this time is different - my famous last words.

Good news - it didn’t bite us this time.  Matter of fact, the portfolio performed like a champ.  For the week, the Real Money Portfolio was up 3.3% v. 0% for the S&P 500.

Let’s take a look at the action.

The great thing about stocks that usual find their way into my portfolios - is that when the move they move.  Unfortunately it cuts both ways, but this time it’s in the direction we like.  For the week, the Real Money Portfolio was up 3.2% v. 0.9% for the S&P 500.  Also by the end of the week, the portfolio was back to 100% invested.  I think this is the third time this year the portfolio has been fully allocated.  In the previous occasions, the week after moving to 100% were disasters.  Let’s hope this time is different - my famous last words.

Let’s take a look at the moves from last week.

Another week of under performing the averages.  It’s kind of difficult to keep up, while sitting on 40% cash.  Hopefully, I will get a couple of buy set-ups this week.  Let’s take a look at what happened this past week.
